Author Comments:
I really wish I would have recorded the books I read much sooner in my life because now it is very hard to remember them all. I have included some kids books that I have read with or to my children fairly recently. This list will be an ongoing project...
I probably screwed up "The Little Prince" - can somebody smart please tell me where it should go alphabetically?

I do believe you would alphabetize it under last name S, as you have it now... the following link supports what my initial hunch was. Apparently the French "de" name component is under a different set of standards than some of the others (like "Le" and "Du")

Oh, and if you like Tolstoy check out Resurrection. But before that, read Perfume by Patrick Suskind. :)
Ahh, thanks for the info, and the book recommendations which I will likely take you up on. Yep - I'm one who appreciates Tolstoy. I always like to balance my fluff books with some weightier ones:)
So I see that you really loved "A Prayer for Owen Meany" which I have sitting on my nightstand. Guess I should get around to reading it. I read Garp just this year - Irving is a terrific writer!
I could *not* get into Garp, but Owen Meany gripped me from the first chapter. Lots of Irving haters out there but I think he does a superb job of riding the fine line between deep and simply entertaining in fiction. And after all, isn't that what we'd like in all of our reads?
I had put off reading Garp because I had heard a lot about it and figured that it was probably overrated and I would end up disappointed. I wasn't as sold on the characters in Garp as I was on Irving's ability to write. I agree with you on this "...he does a superb job of riding the fine line between deep and simply entertaining in fiction." Well put!
I'll probably start Owen Meany today as I just finished up 2 books this weekend.
Perfume is a pretty short read. At least, it seemed like it after reading several 500+ pagers in a row last semester ;)
Oh, and you really do need to add "The Betrothed" by Alessandro Manzoni to your list to read some day... apparently it's considered by many critics to be the definitive 19th c. European novel and, while almost ignored anywhere else, is something nearly every Italian reads some time in high school or college...
It's 800 dense pages, so certainly not a light undertaking. There's so much going on in it, though, that it doesn't feel like work. War, famine, good vs. evil, evil taking a look at itself in the mirror, plague, romance, ... you get the picture ;)
Okay, Perfume I can probably handle, but this: "The Betrothed" by Alessandro Manzoni. It's 800 dense pages..." might just have to wait until the new year. I'm trying to reach a goal of 100 books read this year - not an easy task with 4 kids underfoot!
Thanks for the recommendations - I'm always open to them.
Betrothed is definitely in the same sort of class as War and Peace. I have a solution though... bedtime story! I'm sure the kids will love it!
Ha! Great Idea, only they don't let me pick the books anymore ever since I read them The Black Dahlia at bedtime...:)
Man, I really need to build one of these lists as well... what an intimidating proposition...
Well, I feel my own list is pretty pathetic because I think of books to add to it all of the time until I log in and then can't remember them. I hope that eventually my memory will serve me and I'll get most of them listed. It is indeed quite an undertaking though, but ultimately a nice reference for myself. You should throw one together - don't keep us waiting!
I also have this list, but mine is on paper, when I catch some time I'll probably put it up here on listology, and I agree that it's hard to remember books from early periods of my life, which is sad for me because I read so many books back then it would be lovely to know their titles. Hopefully someday I'll track majority of them down, but if not there's always new ones coming up.
Hi! Yes, you should list your books here on listology for people like me to see! I also jot mine down on paper, and have attempted to write short reviews on several, but it never seems I have enough time to keep up with it. Guess I'll mainly concentrate on the 4 kids for now.
Anyway, I'd love to check out your list of "books read in your lifetime" if you ever get a chance to create it. Good luck!
