So, how would Requiem for a Dream fare against the other 2000 films, in your book? I think it is a visionary, powerful, and frankly, brilliant film that will be acknowledged one day as a masterpiece on par with Taxi Driver and other difficult films. The 2000s have their first masterpiece. Of course, that's just my opinion...

Oh, Requiem is definitely in my top tier for 2000.
I gave it 9 stars on IMDB. Of what I've seen from 2000 my 9 star movies are...
Almost Famous (2000)
Before Night Falls (2000)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Traffic (2000)
Wo hu zang long (2000)
You Can Count on Me (2000)
I am so pissed at the Academy right now. It's not so much that the films themselves won't win anything but getting Oscar notariety is a chance for a film to get noticed. Since they're not getting noticed these films might not get nearly the audience they deserve.
Like Gladiator and Erin Brockovich needed any more notice. Chocolat is another which I don't think is one of the 5 best films of the year. Hell I'd put Chicken Run up there before I'd out Chocolat.
Chicken Run is actually much better than most of the films up for awards.
I knew Requiem was probably too dark for the academy (henceforth demoted to lowercase). The shocker for me is that the film was overlooked for the Editing Oscar! C'mon, it has aroud 4 times the edits that most films have, and it was a powerhouse. Requiem should have won that Oscar by default, and yet it is not even nominated, while the sloppy editing of Gladiator is! Nominations are largely (not always) bought with sheetbombing advertising, and that's too bad.
Shalom, y'all!

Hey, L! Just to let you know...I saw Amores Perros over the last week and this is another film which was incredibly overlooked and is damn close to a masterpiece in its own right. I would venture to say that it is better than Crouching Tiger and should have won the best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
Yeah Amores Perros was a great movie. Best recent foreign language film I've seen in quite a while. The cinematography was cool, and I liked how the story evolved and the way it ended.
I wouldn't be too shocked, for while I enjoyed Crouching Tiger, I did find it HIGHLY over-rated. Amores Perros opened here this weekend along with Memento. Tough choice. I went with Memento, which I greatly, greatly enjoyed (my favorite film of last year next to Requiem for a Dream). Hopefully, if Amores is still here next weekend, I can catch that as well.
Thanks for the extremely well-timed heads-up!
Shalom, y'all!

No rating for JP3? I'm curious to hear if you hated it as much as AAA?
No, I don't think I did. I gave it a 7. And I gave Lost World a 6. It's weird Lost World gets low marks from me because it was directed by Steven Spielberg and yet was probably one of the last enjoyable Spielberg films I have ever seen. I expected a lot out of Lost World. JP3 gets a 7 because I didn't expect much. The first two were based on actual books. Although I think The Lost World might have been written in tandem or at least it feels that way. The original Jurassic Park book blows the first film away and yet Jurassic Park is a good film in it's own right. JP3 sort of cobbles together alot of the snippets and ideas they probably couldn't do in the first two. Needless to say JP3 is definitely an oddball film and doesn't stand up that well when compared to other real films. It sort of gives you the feeling that they could pump these Jurassic Park films out once every year or two. Sort of like a really spaced out Saturday morning serial. But I hope they don't. Eventually I might end up shifting Lost World down to 5 and JP3 down to a 6.
Alas, I'd been looking forward to The Score; why such a low rating?
As usual with most films I don't care for it comes back to the script. There didn't seem to be anything worthwhile in this script to make it worth being made into a movie.
It was sort of neat to see De Niro, Brando and Norton on the screen at the same time and all of the performances were good but it still didn't push into the realm of worth watching. In a weird way it reminded me of the Michael Mann film Heat. So much potential but no delivery.
A film that I don't think is worth watching gets a 5 or lower.
Of the ones that I've seen, I'd certainly agree that your listed "5 or less" movies are worth missing.
Is your rating system described somewhere? I thought I remembered seeing it, but I can't recall where.
I just added it to this list...
Are all the items on this list first-time viewings? Do you/will you flag movies that are "rewatches"?
Jim, instead of noting the rewatches I have highlighted the films I was watching for the first time...
Ah, I was wondering if Cool Hand Luke was a first-timer! Great movie.
Wow, surprised to see you just getting to to Cool Hand Luke. It was so good..wasn't it?
Yes, it was quite good. I'm sure I have quiet a few holes in my movie-watching past. I'm going to try and do a better job of filling them. Right now I have the Criterion Collection of Fritz Lang's M from the local DVD rental establishment. Of course as I completely fill in these gaps the rest of moviedom (specifically recent stuff) is going to be found wanting...
That might not be a bad thing considering the recent stuff coming out but I understand your concerns on time restrictions. I guess thats why it might be nice to be a movie critic. You could get paid for what you love...
Perhaps I worded that wrong. What I meant to say was that if I spend all of my time watching quality films that I think it will become very apparent how much of today's cinema sucks. By wanting I meant lacking.
Seven Samurai! What did you think?
Also, how does From Hell fare against the other movies so far this year?
Seven Samurai was a very, very good film. But I knew that already. I just had never watched it before. When I was through with it I started watching it (The Criterion Collection) a second time with the John Heck commentary turned on. That was some fascinating stuff, too. I got about a half-hour into my second viewing and realized I couldn't commit the time needed for a second viewing of a 3 hour and 23 minute movie.
Have you seen the Criterion Collection edition?
I thought From Hell was a solid film but as you know our opinions differ sometimes so don't take my word for it. :-)
I haven't gotten a chance to see the Criterion Collection yet, but with your word, I will seek that out.
Our opinions may differ, but I highly respect yours, just so ya know :)
