Comment Notifications

I have finally gotten comment notifications running. It works slightly differently than the old site, so jump through for the details.

If you click 'My Account' in the menu, and then click the 'edit' tab, you will see the following options on that screen

If you check the top box, you will receive notifications when someone posts a comment to content you created - a List, Poll or Article. This can only be set globally, and not per-post.

The bottom list allows you to choose your default behavior for notifications when you post comments. The options are

• No notifications (Self-explanatory.)
• All comments (Notify about any comments to this post.)
• Replies to my comments (Notify only about replies to my comment.)

The one thing that is different from the old site here, is that this system only notifies on direct replies. So if someone replies to, and then another replies to THAT person, then you only get the first notification. I think this is a good compromise and it will save me a little traffic. If it is a huge problem then I can look into extending this functionality.

When you go to post a comment, you will have the option to override the default you set on a per-comment basis as shown below

If you change this from your profile setting, it will override for this comment only. This is similar to the old system.

Finally, when you receive a notification, there will be a link in your email which allows you to click to unsubscribe from a thread permanently. This is a nice convenience I think, especially when a post starts getting really busy.
