The Best Years of Our Lives
... As good a "returning home from war" movie as I expect I'll ever see. It's very touching without being melodramatic, and all the performances are wonderful. I also felt a much stronger "sense of place" in this movie than in many others from this era. A side note: can it be an accident that Fredric March, who plays Myrna Loy's husband, reminded me of William Powell?It's a Wonderful Life

... A wonderful adaptation. The attraction between the young Pip and Estella works a bit better than it does when they're all grown-up, and the ending leaves a bit to be desired, but I bet Dickens would be proud. Getting back briefly to Pip and Estella as youngsters, I loved their adolescent, just-past-the-cooties phase jousting. Very well done, and I failed to recognize Jean Simmons.Notorious
... Very enjoyable Hitchcock. I was struck by how suspenseful some of the scenes were, particularly for such an early movie. I did think Cary Grant's character was too much of a jerk for the ending to satisfy me completely, but that's a fairly minor criticism.Glad I Saw
The Big Sleep
... I enjoyed Bogart and Bacall, but the plot was a bit too convoluted for my short modern attention span. I didn't feel quite so bad when I found out from one of the "making of" features that even Chandler couldn't figure out who killed one of the secondary characters.Guilty Pleasures
