Angel Season 1: My 5 Favorite Episodes

  • Lonely Hearts (1.2) - I love the dark and gloomy Angel episodes; and this one stands out to me. This is one that could be a movie if you tack on another hour. I love the whole socializing/dating commentary involved. Angel doing the club scene; I love his awkwardness. And although you find out Kate's undercover, you still think she was being 100% honest with Angel and her reactions were real. This set me up as a Kate fan immediately. Also the movement of this episode was perfect, the shots as the demon jumps from body to body; the music, the settings. It was so painful and lonely and gloomy, just like dating is for (some) of us, lol. I can watch this episode 500 times and never get bored with it.
Favorite Quote: Angel: I'm just looking for someone to... rescue. Are you, maybe, in need of some... rescuing? Kate: Well that's the strangest line I'm going to hear tonight."

  • She (1.13) - Again with the dark, gloomy, goth episodes. I really do love how dark and depressing season one was. And this episode was dark and sexy! Also features Wesley's hilarious nerd-dancing, and Angel's nerd-dancing. Hilarious! I love the balancing of the feminist and the male, and as always, the slight social commentary made in the episode. Bai Ling is EXCELLENT as Jhiera; very intense and convincing. This episode could be a movie also. Angel's suaveness is highlighted in this episode too. As he chases Jhiera through the art museum, and the cops are looking for him, he swiftly changes mode to an extremely knowledgeable art tour guide, and coolly jokes about "Vampires being among us". The crowd laughs unwittingly. :-p
Favorite Quote: Angel: If you vowed to protect the innocent it shouldn't matter which dimension they're from. Jhiera: An easy sentiment when your people are free. Angel: I'm not saying you shouldn't fight. Just know that I will be there to stop you if you cross the line. Jhiera:I don't need an extra conscience. I'll do what I think is right. Angel: And I'll do the same.

  • Eternity (1.17) - A famous actress whose career is fading believes she has found the fountain of youth in Angel. Another great episode of Angel. This one is memorable for the entire "Everlasting Youth & Beauty" idea behind it, and the measures people go to in order to achieve it. Although this was about an actress, it does have the wonderful little social commentary that you not only expect, but love from the Whedon shows. It's also always a joy to see David Boreanaz switch to evil "Angelus" mode! Leather pants and smoke, lol!
Favorite Quote: Wesley: Surely you don't think-- Cordelia: What? That she'd try to maneuver Angel into an exchange of bodily fluids in order to make herself eternally young and beautiful, thus saving her failing career???!!! Gee, now that you mention it!

  • the Ring (1.16) --- Ah, more wonderful social commentary from the Angel gang. Demons are kidnapped by evil humans, demoralized, and are forced to fight each other to the death for the enjoyment of sicko human beings. When Angel is kidnapped and forced into this "fight club", he eventually gets the demons to stop fighting each other and instead to fight the humans who kidnapped and forced them to participate in this sideshow. This episodes makes me think of a lot that's wrong in the world today, lol. You can easily replace those demons with young minority men, however disturbing that may be.
Favorite Quote: Angel: You both did great. And I think I did a good thing here tonight. Wesley: Yes. We set the captives free. Cordelia: Well, actually, didn't we set a bunch of demons free? Wesley: Oh, well, technically...yes.

  • To Shanshu in LA (1.22) - Things begin to unravel in Angel's quiet quest for redemption. Wolfram & Hart, along with a nasty demon, pull out all the stops to make Angel join their side. Cordelia and Wesley both get harmed in this episode, making it a big gut-wrencher. the Oracles have been murdered and nothing seems certain for Angel. At the end, Angel is able to reclaim what's his and take Lindsey's hand as a bonus. :-p
Favorite Quote: Lindsey (to Angel): If you continue to harass our client then we will be forced to bring you into the light of day. A place I'm told is not all that healthy for you.

  • Honorable Mention
  • I Will Remember You (1.8)
Author Comments:

In no particular order. Those are the episode numbers in parenthesis, NOT numerical ratings. So (1.2) would mean: season 1, episode 2. (Although these are all from season one anyway, duh...)

I've never watched Angel, so I won't mind if you neglect him in favour of Buffy :-D

Aww, you should watch the DVDs-- great show also. Equally good and as addictive as Buffy. :-D

thats amazing. thats my favourite 5 eps of season 1 minus "She". Lonely Hearts is in my series top 10. i think i have actually seen it 500 times.
