Author Comments:

I hope the title of this list is self-explanatory enough.

I've decided to allow songs that meet 1 (or more) of 3 criteria, LYric, TItle and/or TRibute (or Anti-Tribute). I've also started adding a bunch more information including the songwriters, who the song was popularized by and the approximate year the song was written, from what I can divine through my Internet research.

Recommendations are welcome!

I'm sure there are many more popular songs about NYC, including "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra (actually a cover for a song written for the movie musical "New York, New York", made in 1977, starring Liza Minelli, and directed by - MARTIN SCORSESE???) and "NYC" from the musical "Annie", but the one that I like the best is "New York City" by They Might Be Giants (which is also a cover for a song written by a Canadian group called Cub). Since we concluded on a different list that you've been listening to TMBG since before I was born, I was wondering if you liked this song too.

I'd also like to nominate the hilarious song "Albuquerque" by Weird Al Yankovic. OK, so it's not really a song, but hey, can you think of any other song about Albuquerque, New Mexico?

Were you only going to include U.S. cities? I'm sure there are a million songs about Paris, but if you're including all the cities of the world, I'll nominated "Goin' Down Geneva" by Van Morrison.

P.S. Speaking of They Might Be Giants (see 1st paragraph), I'm going to a TMBG concert tomorrow in Towson, Maryland! I'm very psyched!

I can't believe I forgot "Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis Presley.

my favorite city tribute song would have to be "city beneath the sea" by harry connick, jr.--which is great tune about new orleans. *sigh*

other suggestions include:
back in NYC - jeff buckley
my kind of town (chicago) - frank sinatra
if you're goin to san francisco - mamas & the papas
miami - will smith
philadelphia - neil young
raining in baltimore - counting crows
city of angels (los angeles) - 10,000 maniacs

and if you're counting canadian cities, etc:
toronto song - arrogant worms
vancouver - jeff buckley

Off the top off my head:
"Angel from Montgomery" - John Prine
"Saginaw Michigan" - Lefty Frizzel
"Galveston" - Glen Campbell

and a twofer:
"Boulder to Birmingham" - Emmylou Harris

One of my favorites... "Going back to South Chicago" by Jeannie & Jimmy Cheatham

I will put in a couple of recommendations for my hometown. Please come to Boston Dave Loggins and Dirty Water by the Standells.

City in title:
"I Love L.A." - Randy Newman
"Philadelphia Freedom" - Elton John
"Chattanooga Choo-Choo" - Glenn Miller
"Last Train To Clarksville" - Monkees

City in song:
Baton Rouge - Where they were busted flat. "Me and Bobby McGee"
Pittsburg - Where Simon and Garfunkel board the bus in "America"
Birmingham, AL - They love the Governor there. Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Sweet Home Alabama"
Winslow, AZ - Where the Eagles "Take It Easy"
New Orleans - When Jesus left Chicago, he was headed there. ZZ Top
Little Rock - Where Stevie Wonder was "Made To Love Her" (his childhood sweetheart)
and of course...
"Surf City" - by Jan and Dean (Is it real?)

While I'm at it... from one of my lists:

What Made Milwaukee Famous – Jerry Lee Lewis
The City Of New Orleans – Arlo Guthrie
All The Way From Memphis – Mott The Hoople
Chicago – Graham Nash

Good recommendations, Stumpy! I haven't heard All the Way to Memphis in awhile but I recall it fondly from my youth. And The City of New Orleans is one of my favorites.

Ooh! If you're taking more than one song for one city, Memphis reminded me of another great song: "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn.

"Statesboro Blues" by the Allman Brothers Band! (or actually a cover from Blind Willie McTell)
What a tune.

Named after my college town in Geeeorgia.

Perhaps a brief jaunt up to Canada? How about Vancouver Shakedown by Nazareth? They're regular visitors to Vancouver, BC.
