Service Restored!

Alrighty, we're back in business. List and comment away!

Listology Read-Only for 24 Hours

Tags:

Starting around 10:00 PM EST tonight you won't be able to edit lists or post comments for around 24 hours. My webhost will be moving Listology back to the shared server to see how it behaves, and if Bad Things happen, they'll want to flip it right back to the other server without having to resynchronize all the cached content. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Alternate Venue

Just thought I'd post a quick note that I've been doing more blogging at my personal site of late. A lot of what I read these days is either off-topic for Listology, or doesn't quite warrant a separate post. I still plan on continuing blogging here, but just thought I'd mention this, in case anyone wants more (can't imagine!).

Edit Button Behavior

Tags:

As a result of the new optimizations, the "Edit" button you see when viewing one of your own lists has changed. Used to be that button only appeared on your own lists, but now it appears on all lists. If you click it for a list you don't own, you'll get a message telling you you can't do that. When I was rendering the page on the fly I could display that button selectively, but now that the page is pre-rendered upon saving the list, I can't do that anymore.

Site Updates

I'm in the process of deploying various optimizations. During this time, some (or all) lists might not display, as I haven't populated the new cache yet. Hang in there...

UPDATE: Three hours later, and I think I'm done. Pages are now pre-rendered upon saving, and then simply output as-is when viewing. This should make saving a bit slower, and viewing a bit faster. And the whole thing is probably buggier, as this was a big backstage change. Let me know if you notice anything odd. Thanks!

Listology Good News and Bad News

Tags:

Well gang, the good news is that Listology is going strong. Lots of traffic. The bad news is, well, that Listology is going strong. My ISP informs me it's currently burning through bandwidth at around eight times the rate of other sites on the same plan. With the current AdSense ads (both the old right-side ones and the newly positioned ones) Listology was consistently running a bit shy of break-even, and I personally can't absorb a big hosting fee hike.

Technical Difficulties

Tags:

My ISP is having some problems that might be caused by Listolgy (sure, not fully diagnosed). They are going to move me to another server temporarily. Apologies in advance for any outages in the next few hours (days?).

I Feel So Used

Tags:

Another day, another pet project, but at least this one is fairly topical to we movie, book, and music lovers. I just whipped up a site called "I Feel So Used" that facilitates tracking used items at Amazon, highlighting the price difference between used and new. I know I like to bide my time while I wait for the used prices to drop, and this ought to help me keep tabs on that. Here's a taste of what the meat of the site looks like.

Google, Listology and Me

Tags:

Listology can be searched using Google by entering the following search subject:

"....." site:listology.com

putting an exact phrase between the quotation marks.

Here are some of the results I have obtained (today, 21 January 2006) regarding my own part in Listology.

"bertie" - 39 700 hits
"bertie's" - 563 hits

"by bertie" - 21 700 hits - I expected there to be a lot more hits than would account for the titles of my lists, etc., but not *this* many.

"bertie wrote" - 569 hits
"bertie replied" - 892 hits
"reply to bertie" - 18 700 hits

"that jerk, bertie" - no hits
"get rid of bertie" - no

Wow, what a great evening! I just get back from a rare theatrical outing (King Kong, loved it) to discover that one of my favorite blogs has discovered Listology and linked us up!
