Listology Maintenance

Tags:

I just made a pile of architectural changes to Listology. No new features, boringly enough, but I did code some updates that should make it easier for me to bring new sites online based on the Listology infrastructure (I want to move my quotes list to it's own site, and I want to start a fitness site, for starters). Let me know if you notice any problems with Listology. Thanks!

When the Cat's Away...

Well folks, it's summertime and the livin' is easy. I'm outta here for a couple weeks! See you in July-ish.

Music-Sharing Angst

Tags:

The social minefield of music sharing:

Participants confessed to forming judgements about co-workers based on the taste - or lack of taste - revealed by their music collection. Many also admitted to tailoring their own music library to project a particular persona, and some said they deliberately hid particularly embarrassing tracks from others.

I love that "bought for his wife" is in quotes, perhaps implying lying.

Evernote Revisited

Tags:

I recently gave Evernote a look, and the more I use it the more I like it. Let me give you a concrete example of how easy it makes tracking things like movies to watch or books to read. Check out this screenshot. It is a snippet of a Listology conversation stored to EverNote. I grabbed it because it made me want to check out the books mentioned therein.

Great Firefox Extension for Listologists

Tags:

Have you ever wished the big Listology text fields (like for entering lists or forum posts) were a bit bigger? Do you use Firefox? Then by all means install Resizeable Textarea. It allows you to drag-resize such fields! I've only tried it on one field, but it worked like a charm, so I rushed over here to post this.

OT: An Easter Question

Tags:

Last year we did our Easter egg hunt outside, but this year it was so early there was too much snow (eggs on the surface? Too easy. Eggs buried? Too hard). The earliness of Easter made me wonder: why is it that Christmas is a known fixed date, but Easter floats around?

All Things in Moderation

Tags:

You may not know this, but I moderate posts from new users until they establish themselves as non-trolls, after which I clear 'em and they have free reign (reserving the right to revoke if they get abusive, of course). Usually it's easy. Most posts are either obviously abusive or obviously in the spirit of the site. These have me stumped though. They might be friendly smack-talking, they might be insulting. They are all directed at the same person, but posted on different lists:

i just saw your list! man that is a work in progress. its got to progress a long way mister.

Netflix Tracker Updates

Tags:

I've made a few updates to the Netflix Tracker. When you report a movie as lost, that becomes the date Netflix "receives" the movie. Previously it was going with whatever date the movie was found on (if ever), inflating the turnaround time for that record. The tracker now also handles importing multi-disc records. I also added an option to make your turnaround report public.

Note to Firefox/Blogliners

I realize this is probably a miniscule portion of my readership, but if Firefox is your browser of choice, and you subscribe to Listology's feed via Bloglines, you've probably noticed that spoilers are not spoilerized when you read the feed in Bloglines.

Nuking the Hall of Fame

Tags:

I'm thinking about ditching the Hall of Fame. Here's some background. Objections?

UPDATE: Thanks for the feedback everybody! For now the "Hall of Fame" is renamed to the equally cheesy "Rising Stars", and just shows half of what used to be there (the half where you're only eligible to appear on the page if you joined in the last three months).
