Listology

Another Feature of Limited Appeal

Tags:

I've created a condensed, stripped-down version of the "my content" menu. I mostly did this for myself, but thought maybe a few of you might like it too. I use it because Firebird allows me to set particular bookmarks to load in the sidebar. With this screen loaded in the sidebar, I can click on V (view) or E (edit) for any of my lists and have it appear in the main browser window.

New Confusing Feature

Y'know how when you make a discussion post you have to check by hand the "check here to be e-mailed responses to this post" checkbox if that's what you desire? Well now there's a preference you can set that will result in that box being checked by default. Go to My Menu, Profile, and check the box labelled, "Check here to receive e-mail copies of responses to your discussion posts by default." Quite a mouthful, huh?

RSS Feed Wanted?

Who would use an RSS feed of the home page, were I to create one? Bear in mind it would probably just be headlines, because the only thing that's come close to paying the bills around here are those Google ads to your right.

Outta Here!

I won't be anywhere near my computer from 6/29 through 7/11, so no posts from me until then. I'll resume regularly scheduled programming just as soon as I can dig out of the massive e-mail/weblog backlog I'm sure to encounter upon my return. Until then...

(Oh, dang, meant to post reviews of Two Weeks Notice, Love Actually, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban before leaving. Guess those'll have to wait too.)

Google AdSense Progress Report

Tags:

Good news! In the first month Google AdSense ads covered almost half of Listology's $100/month hosting fees. So all we have to do is double the traffic to break even, which is a sight better than the order-of-magnitude increase I was expecting we'd need. If you're curious about how the ads work, including how Listology gets paid, here's Google's FAQ.

New Listology Features

Tags:

I've added a couple Listology features that I really like, and I hope you will too.

First, I tweaked the formatting of the home page. Nothing major - mostly font spacing and a new format for the quoted material.

The big change though is in the member directory (you might have to do a "refresh" for the new stylesheet to load - look for a dark green header on the table). Most of the changes speak for themselves, but the primary one is the ability to see "recent activity" by user.

Home Page Changes

Tags:

I've turned off the "anybody can post to the home page" feature of Listology, and instead will only make that feature available to editors, of which there are three at the moment. Let me know if you want to be an editor. I'm going to try to make the home page more outward-looking, and hopefully I'll be able to post interesting stuff. The proof will be in the pudding (a gloppy, messy place to hide your proof if ever there was one, and talk about obvious!).

Google AdSense Ads

Tags:

In the ongoing quest to get Listology out of the red, I've added Google AdSense ads to the list pages. Donors will not see the ads. If you feel you are seeing the ads in error, please let me know. We'll give this a whirl for awhile and see how it goes. Hopefully this will a least put a dent in the overhead. Thanks!

I'll be away from my computer until Monday. Sorry in advance about the moderation delay for brand new users. See y'all soon.
